Summary

This study is an observational, descriptive research of a selected G.N. Division with known cases of Chronic kidney disease of uncertain aetiology (CKDu). Their residential area has no pipe-borne water supply, where natural ground water used for cooking and drinking is known to have a high content of fluoride and total dissolved solutes (TDS). The research is planned to investigate the effect of using drinking and cooking water with greatly reduced fluoride content and TDS, on the prevalence, incidence and severity of CKDu.

At the initial phase of the project, complete socio-demographic and life-styles survey of the entire population has been done with particular regard to prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, snake-bite known kidney disease and to the people with diagnosed CKDu. Complete baseline biochemical, clinical and anthropometric data of all residents of the area has also been recorded, as well as clinical evidence of fluorosis. Furthermore, all sources of natural ground water used for drinking and cooking have been analysed for fluoride and TDS.

Water treatment plant, distributing water with greatly reduced fluoride and TDS, has been set up in the area and the plant treated water is supplied to all recruited households in the area for 36 months. Simultaneously, the health status of all recruited persons is monitored at scheduled intervals clinically as well as biochemically, during the entire study.

The research group is optimistic that their inputs, particularly the treated drinking and cooking water will eliminate or greatly decrease the incidence (and severity, in known sufferers) of not only CKDu but also dental and skeletal fluorosis in the area, sustainable over the years.
