The NRC comprises of the Chairman and fourteen other members. Twelve members have been chosen from researchers in Sri Lanka, who have a top rating in productivity of research publications in refereed international scientific periodicals. The choice of persons strives to ensure a maximum coverage of disciplines and institutional distribution reflecting the leading centres of research productivity.

The three other members have been selected to represent the private sector, who have been recognized for their wide contribution to the national economy.
